All animals have some center of balance in their inner-ears. The inner-ear sense of balance in humans is far superior to that of our eyes.

Here's a good example to prove it. Try walking 30-40 feet with a cup filled with water or coffee nearly to the brim (just a tiny bit short of the brim). Don't walk a straight line ... make a course with a few turns in it.

Walk the course once not looking at the cup and once with your eyes on the cup. You will spill more water walking with your eyes on the cup. Your inner-ear sense of balance is better than your eyes.

Hi Alison--

Yes,
All animals with backbones (vertibrates) sense motion and balance using liquid-filled cavities and detection (hair) cells that are swayed by the liquid.

Thorough explanation at Wikipedia... It's a classic and interesting topic...

"The vestibular system of the inner ear is responsible for the sensations of balance and motion. It uses the same kinds of fluids and detection cells (hair cells) as the cochlea uses, and sends information to the brain about the attitude, rotation, and linear motion of the head. The type of motion or attitude detected by a hair cell depends on its associated mechanical structures, such as the curved tube of a semicircular canal or the calcium carbonate crystals (otolith) of the saccule and utricle.

The inner ear is innervated by the eighth cranial nerve in all vertebrates."
