Even with anti-virus and firewall properly configured you still need to have good internet and computer habits.

New viruses and other bugs come out all the time. Anti-virus programs are two fold.. there is the initial engine that you install and a library file which is constantly updated from the vendor. it's called a .dat file (think of this file as a library of all known virus signatures). So there is always a chance that a new virus will come out before your software vendor updates.

Also, there are some viruses that your anti-virus program will catch and try to get rid of but may still deliver their payload.

Phishing is when someone sends you an email that appears to be from someplace you know.. like paypal... but it's not really from paypal and is designed to trick you into clicking on the link and entering in your credit card or other information... anti-virus won't protect you from this nor will firewall or anti-spyware... only good browsing habits and security awareness will help you with that.

good luck :)

keeping norton up todate and doing full scans is a good practice.
as for opening emails you will need to be carefull as many worms etc.. get spread thru emails (some disguised as from soneone you know in address book).
caution is still needed.
i would also check symantec.com and keep up with the advisories there so you know what to avoid

Yes! to some extent, cos it's better to use an anti-virus on your system, to prevent it from getting infected. But i would prefer that you install a licensed one instead.
It also depends on what the system is being used for, i can also recommend you to install Deep freeze, which is a software from Winferno. This software erases temporal files on the system once it's being shutdown.

NEVER open any e-mail you do not recognise.
No matter how good your anti virus programme is.
The virus will simply waltz past any anti virus programme as you have invited it in.

Norton does not work. I had it on my new computer for two weks and it crashed yesterday from a virus. Use AVG and Spybot, they are both reccomended by Microsoft, so they are safe to download. Hope this helped.
