I just want to point it out because some "thumbs down troll" is stalking me , I get violation notices for no reason and I think it's very unfair. Sorry my friends! I am here to help and have fun if I can and some people, just don't have anything better to do.

I did for very similar reasons to yours only mine were directly due to a person sending me very nasty emails because they didn't like me. They made their displeasure known by giving me violations directly relating to their questions after the nice "nastygram" they sent me saying they didn't like my questions.

mine has been set that way for some time now only because of the wonderful violation notices I was receiving daily for resolved questions over 8 months old... It was much simpler to make it private than argue my case 3 and 4 times a day to the higher ups!

I not only made my Q&A private I made my Network as well. I had a stalker who was picking on anyone I gave a best answer to other than him. When I was made aware of the hate mail he was generating -- I blocked him and made everrything about me private to my Network.
Sad to say there are a few people who are unstable out there.

The trusted few can see my questions/answers from within my profile, and that's all the freedom I will allow

not yet...but i have a feeling it is coming soon as there are more and more people like you described coming in and causing problems. you would think if yahoo has people smart enough to come up with the program they could be smart enough to monitor it appropriate...but i digress...

any contacts that are new and a low level and don't answer your questions,block them!any contact who hasn't answered your questions and you haven't answered theirs,block them,or remove them!

i really don't give a damn if i get thumbs down for my answer or not they only get on my nerves when they thumb down the people that answer my questions
