Is it a kind of Minnow? They fairly recently (a couple years ago) discovered the Celestial Pearl Danio/Galaxy Rasbora in that area, and it sounds very similar to what you have described...

Soop Nazi

EDIT: It was actually not over collected. That was a story made up by a guy who wanted to increase the price on them by creating a "lower" supply. If they were so rare in the wild:
a. It wouldn't be considered the poor man's food (poor villages eat entire schools of Celestial Pearl Danios at a time)
b. It wouldn't be selling for around $3 retail... (if it REALLY WAS endangered, it would be about $10 retail OR illegal...)

they discovered the galaxy rasbora in myamnar a year ago, and it's already endangered in the wild now due to over-collecting for the pet trade.

there are lots of people over there looking for new species, i just wish more research would be done on them in their natural environment and a small group be taken to breed in captivity, so they're not over-collected and put on the endangered species list :(
