No gift is ever a crap.
It is the willing of the person to offer a gift that counts.
Not the object.
edit.
My gift for your next week's bday, could have been my two thumbs down I received already, just because I said that it is the person that counts and not the object!!!
See what friends are for?? hehehe... I will think about your gift, in due time. Do not worry!

Did someone give you a crappy birthday card? Sorry. Usually I get nice ones. My fave. are the ones people make themselves, which are very rare. I mean if all you're gonna get a person is a store bought card (oh and this only pertains to friends and fam.) at least snaz it up a bit with a check or something.

Yup.
My mom made it a point to get crappy gifts for everyone when I was growing up. She would say that she wanted us to appreciate the thought and not be materialistic. She would go out of her way to make sure we didn't get what we wanted, so that when we earned the money to buy it ourselves, we'd be more grateful for what we had.
It was weird, and I still see her do that for my young cousins, they just look puzzled when they open her gifts. I think she thinks she's teaching them something. All I learned is that my mom is cheap.
EDIT
My favorite weird gift from my mom was a soap dispenser.

Yes, in one birthday, someone brought me a Mercedes key holder but I do not have a car. So I gave it to my brother who has a Seat and he said it was useless. He thought it was a crap gift too.
