It definitely happens, but not like in high school where you use blatant intimidation techniques. These players play on such a high level, and know their opponent so intimately, its difficult to get inside someone's head with the normal chatter you see in the gym, street, or the local rec. However, the NBA floor is loud with constant conversation, most often directed towards their own teammates (see the Kobe wireless mic video on youtube), with the occasional trash talking (read: Gary Payton). More often, you'll see stare downs after cold jumpers, ala T-mac, Kobe, or some other more sophisticated form of getting in their opponents heads. Of course, you'll always have the aforementioned Paytons and Rasheeds doing the Larry Legend school of "I'm gonna kick your *** all night long" court talk too.

Trash talking still happens today in the NBA especially when there is a rivalry and one player hates the other. They will try to prove who is better. It's better to just talk the talk and walk the walk. Some players can't or just don't have the skill to do that.

THE ART OF TRASH TALK HAS EVOLVED, THE KIDS IN THE LEAUGE NOW HAVE RUINED THE TALKING BY BECOMEING VIOLENT IF THE FEEL DISSED, NOT LIKE THE OLD DAYS WHERE YOUR GAME WAS YOUR COMEBACK.
