its a Dell Inspiron 6000, it wont start up it says PBR2 loaded but the screen doesnt change, i can't get into safe mode and the pre-boot system assessment (build 3017) reads DST short status test on hard drive detects error. Error Code 0F00:0228, Msg block: timeout waiting for drive not busy. then repeats for error code 1 and msg block 1 onwards. Now i try and start it up its saying No Boot Sector on Internal Hard Drive, PXE-Eld: Media test failure, check cable, No bootable devie - - strike F1 to continue (which i do and get no progress). Whats the problem as i have no idea what any of that stuff means and also i just need to recover one document then i dont mind losing everything ese as the rest is externally backed up but its really really important. any instructions or estimates how much it will cost to get fixed would be much appreciated.

Sorry but your hard drive just died on you. It will be a very expensive exercise to let the professionals retrieve your data with only one file being important. You did great in backing up the rest. Otherwise, it would really have been disastrous.

It's not going to happen, no matter what you do. You just plain cannot run the Mac OS on an AMD processor. Not to mention that this whole idea is illegal because it breaks Apple's licensing and you will get NO support from Apple, and no updates. The other problem is that in attempting to do this, there's a pretty good chance that you could brick your machine. If you truly want to run both the Mac OS and Windows 7 (and get iLife as part of the whole thing), get a Mac, use Bootcamp to partition your hard drive and install Windows on the partition.

Hit f12 at startup. Choose boot to diagnostic partition. Run HD and MB test. It is likely that your hd is toast. If you need data from the disk, you will need to pay to have it recovered from geek squad, data doctors, or firedog.
It could be HD failure, but it could be something as simple as the bios being set to boot from USB. The Bios instruct the comp to look for the primary boot record on the first boot device which may incorrectly be set for usb. Go to F2 choose boot order, and place hd 1 cd2 and usb last. Reboot, it may work. Inspirons do not have intenal cables to the HD, they are swapable. If you do have a bad HD, use your warranty or just buy a new HD, put it in the slot. Put your recovery cd in and hit f12/usb or cd rom/ install. Then instal drivers. If you do not have the disks, dell will mail them to you for free if you ask nicely, even if the warranty is expired.

have you tried gettting into the bios to make sure it is set up right for the disk drive? You can always go to the dell site and see of there is a bios update needed. I know you must be able to start to flash the bios. It really sounds like the drive died if it is even starting to spin. In a quiet environment you should be able to hear it run.

Your drive is just about dead. I'd advise you to stop trying to access it because each try is costing it some of its remaining life. Instead, remove it from your computer and bring it to a professional data recovery firm. They have a much better chance than you do of getting that one important document off the disk before it completely fails.

Try accessing your FAILING hard drive using a Linux Live CD (Knoppix and Kubuntu are good), google for them.
When you recover your critical file, replace the hard drive ASAP.
Next time, save important files in your Yahoo Briefcase.
