As someone else here pointed out, it's due to the properties of a geometric progression. Assume that you start off with two people, and that the number of kids they have is double their number (e.g., Adam and Eve have 4 kids), and that this occurs in each generation. It would only take about 30 generations to have over a billion people on the planet. If you assume that a generation is 20 years, you could easily have the Earth populated in the 6,000 years that Biblical literalists believe that the Earth has existed.
Not that I believe that the Earth is 6,000 years old. There would also be a little problem with inbreeding...

Exponential geometric progression.
"obviously"????? Don't think that "Adam and Eve" are very "obvious." Just a story for children.
