people, places, things, and events that affect the story.

for example: Gone with the Wind- Rhett, Scarlett (people), The South (place) horses, taxes, Tara (things) and fire, civil war, adultry, death (events which shape the story)

the plot is the core of the story that all the details center around.

plot refers to the line of action, in other words, what is actually happening in the story. it is the simplest and usually the least important part of a story. most plots are redone over and over in different ways in different eras, and it has been said that there are only about three plots: lover wins love, lover loses love, lover wins, then loses, then wins back love. the aspect of a story which makes it a good read is not its plot, but the the manner in which the action unfolds, the conflicts which arise between the characters, and the tone of the story: is it scary, or funny or philosophical, or is it a tale of inner conflict. This is a plot: the man ran across the street. This is an aspect: the angry, drunk man ran across the street and felt much better afterwards. I hope this helps.

Plot is the direction the entire story goes and pretty much leads to the outcome of the story. The plot is what makes it interesting to read. Without a plot, you would get bored rather easily because the story would not keep you interested.

The "plot" of a story is a chain of events ,some come from a prior event and then continue to a future event...
example...
(Jenny ran into her best friend Katie, they both fell down and Katie sprained her left ankle) next event would be [Katie going to the hospital with or without her friend Jenny]... depending on how the author writes the story.
So,... "plot" is the structure of events within a story and the causal relationship between them.

The plot is the chain of events like:

boy meets girl
they dated
boy gets girl

Plot is how you arrange the chain of events to make your story interesting. It does not always mean to go on a straight line, sometimes it gives a flashback.
