No, the real acrimony used to only be around election time. There was a lot of bipartisan cooperation at other times. It can happen again; people are sick of the divisiveness.

But many people treat politics that way.
The main difference:
Democrats believe that individuals have little power compared to corporations and the government must regulate business to prevent abuses, such as have occurred in the past.
Republicans believe that a free market economy finds the most efficient solution to problems and issues and therefore few constraints shoud be put on businesses.
