My girlfriend has graduated from college last month. She has not been finding any jobs that are related to her field yet, and she wants to stay in town. She has applied for many jobs that only require a high school diploma. Almost none have called her for an interview. She is a college graduate. My question is, will employers not call people because they are over-qualified? In her case, is she not getting calls because those employers are calling people with only a high school diploma? I need an outside opinion on this.

If the jobs are typical jobs for a high school graduate (retail, fast food, etc.), and it is obvious that she just graduated from college, they probably realize she is just looking at these jobs until she finds something better. It is not so much because she is overqualified, but because they assume she will quit as soon as she finds a better job.

Why is your girlfriend applying for jobs that only require a high school diploma when she's a college graduate? Yes, she's over qualified and no, employers aren't going to bother calling her.

In such case, there are 2 things the person can do:
1) When apply for the job, just fill-in the qualification that job required, eg, high school, basic diploma, etc. inorder to raise the chance to get a job.
2) Go to another town that accept the qualification the person have.

You didn't say what degree or what jobs... Would they call somebody with a basket weaving degree to be a secretary? You betcha. Would the local McDonalds hire a Harvard MBA to be a fry cook... doubtful.
