He got off too easy because Goodell and the Patriots owner are "tight". If you recall before he became commissioner, they used to be (and still are) close friends.

JASON, IF THAT'S THE CASE WHY SUSPEND A DALLAS COACH FOR 3 OR 4 GAMES FOR TAKING A DRUG TO FEEL GOOD WITH A GIRL, BUT NOT THE PATIOT COACH FOR CHEATING IN THE NFL?

Goodell gave the Pats a very light punishment for what they were caught doing. Suspension without pay for 1-2 years would be a good start and maybe loss of first and second round draft choices for 5 years with a much larger money penalty for the club. This team has won by knowing the other teams alignment and plays on some very key play situations for who knows how long. The "success" this team claims is probably based on Belicheat's spying ways that have made him such a "genius".

I thought the punishment was fair given the situation. I mean Belichick and the Patriots were fined a sum of $750,000 and the team has now loses two draft picks in the upcoming drafts.

Suspending Belichick wouldn't keep him from preparing the teams at practice, and the offensive and defensive plays are called for the most part by the Coordinators.

I think the only way the commish could improve on the punishment would have been to apply the $750,000 to the teams cap rather than a fine. Taking that much away from the team's cap next year would have been a better punishment when you take into account how much the Pats earn in revenue.

because every nfl team steals signals.....they just dont film it. the pats filmed it and they got the maximum fine. when people compare this "cheating" to steroids it makes no sense. not everyone in the nfl is taking steroids (its not baseball). but every team tries to not only see what the signals are but they try and read the mouths of coaches to get an advantage. even if you know the play thats coming you still have to pick up the blitz and make the throw and catch. goodell came down tough on this issue half a mill out of bills pocket will make him think twice about doing this again. and if the pats didnt acquire the 49s first round pick then everyone in new england would be whining about how harsh of a penalty this is. its a good punishment from goodell and it fits the crime. the only way i could see a suspension being appropriate here is if it was for one game and it was when they play the jets again.

Who else has been suspended for breaking NFL rules? If you are talking about Pacman Jones, Michael Vick, and Tank Johnson, they were all involved in criminal activities, outside of the NFL. I'm not defending Belichik, because I really don't like him or the Patriots, but breaking the law, and breaking the rules of the NFL are two completely different things.

It does seem strange that they hold coaches and players to different standards. I think this is the first time that the NFL has ever had to deal with a situation like this, so they don't have a set penalty in place. I think we will definitely see a concrete penalty put in place in the NFL rulebook after this season is over.

Then again, half a million dollars isn't something to scoff at.

Hater. They all do it, college and pro, he just got caught. It sounds like Mangini just wanted to get him busted. Suspend a coach for four games? Are you serious? Why not just try to have him brought up on charges, that way football can have a black eye just like baseball and the NBA.

Well at least now we all know that Roger Goodell indeed holds different teams to double standards.

most people who arnt jealouse of the patriots success think the punishment is extreme.and will be appealed ....and fines will be reduced, Goodall is in Krafts back pocket Im sure Bellichick would have prefered a 4 game suspension over loosing a 1st round pick.Ignorant people like yourself dont undersatnd that the punishment th epats got is the max!

They gave him punishment that was the maximum as outlined in the nfl constitution and bylaws.

while i can see where your coming from with this.

they did fine him 500,000 and a 1st round pick (which is huge) even though still have one in the trade for Moss. 500,000 dollars isn't exactly chump change regardless of what your making.
