Should be fairly easy. First-turn off gas. All heaters the last 50 yrs. or so are protected by not turning on if thermocouple isn't heated by pilot flame. Most problems are from dirt/dust in pilot air stream and just need to be blown out-90% of the time!(blow through 1/4" hose into air hole on pilot). The pilot won't heat up or stay lit if air flow is affected. If you do need to replace thermocouple, there's a heat shield you need to remove(screws), disconnect the two control wires,(note which is hooked up where on controller), slip out thermo-couple, and replace. Once in, follow instructions for heater and light pilot flame:might take a few times-hold pilot button down at least 30 seconds and light.-Once the thermocouple is warmed up-1 or 2 mins., set the heater up and it should fire up. NEVER LEAVE THE GAS ON WITH PILOT FLAME OUT/OFF, OR UNATTENDED.
Good luck- 'n peace.

Cleaning the thermocouple will not help. Either the thermocouple is bad and needs to be replaced or the pilot light itself needs to be adjusted or cleaned. You need a good strong pilot that fully engulfs the thermocouple. If you have that and the pilot won't keep burning replace the thermocouple or have it done. If you can not determine how to do it by looking at it, you need to hire someone.

It is illegal for a none expert to interfere with the safety of a gas appliance, if you did and things went wrong then you are responsible for any damage caused in your neighbourhood as are those who aid and abet, so no help from me. Meddling invalidates your home insurance, Call out the experts and do not be a fool.

First use the sweeper hose on the whole thing. We do that every year. Not only does the thermocoupler need cleaned it needs to be positioned so it will receive the proper gas/air ratio. So, try these things before you hire someone. Also, check your directions, ours has a toll free # to call for assistance.
