I have studied much that most humans could care less about.
One thing that fascinates me is the ancient visualization stuff as meditation.
I have a number of things that I have decided I want to "engage" in my life. I have made word lists and I have drawn pictures sometimes even with oils on canvas. This to me is 'Preparation'
then when I wake up in the middle of the night - I resist the temptation to move (I dont toss and turn in other words)
I take my latest "goal" (which I am already prepared to dwell on) and I either repeatedly say something silently inside like a mantra over and over or I take one of my pictures and serenely visualize for as long as I can.
Sometimes this knocks me out again for only an hour.
If after an hour I return to wakefulness, I do it all over again.
Usually the result is that I remember a lot of dreams in the morning.
I find that this allows me to have the rest that tossing and turning deny me.
One of the more amazing results of this is in my waking day sometimes I see better that something is an open door to an opportunity to something that I meditated on
and I am more apt to chose to do something that I might other wise have chosen differently and find myself accomplishing my desires.
And I also get my night's rest
My Uncle always took an hour's "Nap" between Lunch and the evening meal
He used to say " I only lay down. I dont actually sleep." and my Aunt used to say "Well you sure fooled me that you dont sleep."
When he died, we found notebooks full of largely undecipherable writings that we presumed meant something to him. - Once I learned of this practice I believe I have discovered what it was that he too was doing!

Sounds like you may need to release some of that stress! Can totally understand, staying up because of stress! Your mind is racing A million miles an HR. Have you tried reading to make your eyes tired, warm milk; I'm sure u know of all these things. I only sleep for 5 or so hrs. at A time, no matter how tired I am. Hope you get more sleep,
most people are in the same boat. Maybe you should pray about it.

Me too. Didn't get to sleep until about 1 a.m. and I had to be up at 7. I woke up very tired, especially because I tossed and turned all night. And when I finally fell into a sleep deep enough to dream, I had a nightmare. What's up with the universe?

Hey Granny, I am a Granny, too. I am up on this computer because I can't sleep either. I am so tired of staying up all night. I will fall asleep at 5 or 6 in the morning and then get up at 9. You would think I would be tired the next night, but I am not. I wish I had an answer for you.

Theone thread that runs through all the answers is that of treating break in sleep as a malady. I never had any problem with sleep except when I was waiting for a cataract operation .I was required to lie down in the bed for long hours. Though initially I used to doze of every now and then it went on reducing. Worried about possible insomnia I talked with the doctor. He reassured me that by resting without much physical action for long hours amounted to sleep with open eyes and since all my requirements of sleep were met by this somnabulistic state just a dozing off now and then met all my requirements of sleep and I need not worry. As I resume my daily routine after the operation this condition would disappear and so it did. So look out if you are not resting the body --so to say sleeping with open eyes--too much and if so flog it to pick up . Sleep will take care of itself.

I read, pray and get up and meditate. I drink tea (sleepy time tea). I try to sleep and after an hour get up go through the same things and lie down and go over the same drill. If nothing works I lie still and in the morning get up take no nap and wait it out..hoping to sleep the next night. I have gone 4 nights until exhaustion knocks me out.

I read a boring magazine or book that doesn't require me to
think hard ( ha-ha) Or I turn the TV on real low until I feel myself getting sleepy. Sometimes that backfires on me though and I leave the TV on all night which keeps waking me up over and over but not enough for me to turn it off. Then I'm real tired the next day. Using the computer or exercising makes me even more awake so I can't do that.
I hope you had sweet dreams Granny...

I clean up the house, take an over the counter sleep aide and then play on the computer until I get sleepy. Sometimes I have even been known to read a book in bed until I go to sleep.

Oh Granny, I do what you are NOT suppose to do! lol I usually work on my dolls or, the house. I just can't stay put if I can't sleep. In fact, I am on the computer and it is after two in the morning here!
So, do not follow my advice as you would not be sleeping until four or five in the morning!
I hope you get to bed and get some much needed rest.

Usually I will pick up a good book and read until my eyes get heavy. Or I will get up and do a nice Cardio workout. If that fails then I will log on to the computer and type away my sleepless night. I usually stay away from eating anything, because the minute I eat I am up for good.
