I am looking for some advice on how to help my baby sleep better. I used to give him a dummy and rock him to sleep in my arms but i just took the dummy off him 3 days ago and have seen a little improvement and stopped holding him to sleep but know i rock him in the pram to go to sleep. My question is how to teach him to go to sleep by himself without leaving him to cry as i am against the control crying method i think it's mean. I would love to start getting some sleep as my 2 1/2 year old daughter is very active. Also i live in Australia and we are able to give our babies solids at 4 months old, i just started yesterday to give him a little farex and i gave him a bottle at 10pm last night and he slept till 4am but would like him to go a bit longer, Will solids help? When can i give him 2 solids a day?

At this stage most babies are waking up out of habit not hunger, so you don't have to feed him. If you soothe him back to sleep without food, after a few days he won't wake for it.

I have a four month old and we read Healthy Baby, Healthy Sleep Habits by Dr. Weissbluth. (not sure the title is exactly correct). Anyway, I can't recommend it enough! It gives options for crying and not crying. In the end, my husband and I let the baby cry one night as he kept drifting back to sleep as we made it to the nursery and waking again once we got to bed - on and off every 10 minutes or so. It was one long night, but letting him cry was probably the best thing we ever did as he started sleeping 10 -11 hours a night, and falling asleep on his own, the very next night! We now have a super happy little baby, no crying at bed time or during the night, etc. Please don't think it is cruel as you will all be much happier once you are all getting some sleep - your baby as well as you!

My baby is 4 months 2 weeks, and she wakes up about 2 - 3 times a night to eat. My book, What to expect the 1st year, says that its completely normal and usually babies don't start sleeping thru the night till about 9 - 12 months. Yay, huh?

Four months is still a little one. Sleeping from 10 pm to 4am is wonderful. When he wakes at 4 don't turn the lights on or the TV. Turn on a dim light. this is not social hour. Keep baby mellow. Be happy baby is sleeping that long.

I wouldn't add any more foods.

Hang in there.

Regarding the "cry it out method" I agree with you 100%. It's child abuse. Try getting the book called "The no cry sleep solution" it gives you tips on helping bubs to sleep without traumatizing them. So your baby slept from 10-4... that's a good start! Good luck!

Mine did that, she was sleeping so well then out of the blue she started waking up around about three o'clock, she'd be awake for hours. After about a week of this I rang the health visitor who suggested increasing her food, so I did. Voila she was sleeping through again!
