A car travels at 30 mph directly north from a certain point. At the same time, a car traveling 40 mph travels directly east from this point. What is the straight-line distance (in miles) between these cars at the end of 2 hrs?
20, 70, 100, 140, 1000

the sign on a parking meter in Cambridge reads: "12 min for 5 cents. Maximum deposit is 25 cents." What is the maximum number of hours a driver may legally park at one of the meters for a nickel and a dime?
1/2, 3/5, 5/6, 1 3/5, 12

When a printing company calculates the weight of its packages, it allows 4% of the net weight for wrapping, binding, and cord. The printed materials to be shipped to a customer weighs 150 pounds. The gross weight, in pounds will be:

For the first problem the first thing u need to do is figure out how many miles in each direction each car has traveled. So the first car has traveled 2*30=60 miles north and the second car has traveled 2*40=80 miles east.

now u can treat this as a triangle with 2 side known and 1 unknown. to solve this problem u can simply use the formula a^2+b^2=c^2
where c is the hypotenuse and a and b are the adjacent and the opposite sides.

60^2+80^2=c^2

c^2=10000

c=100

therefore the straight line distance between the 2 cars is 100miles

Now for the second problem.

A nickel and a dime adds to 15cents (i hope i only just checked on wikipedia now! i'm from australia so i didn't know)

So that means the driver can park for 12minutes multiplied by 3

12*3=36min

to find that in hours do the following:

36/60=0.6 hours=3/5 hours

Now for the final question

basically it says that the net weight is 150pounds and an additional 4% of that can be used for wrapping etc u need to find how much is 4% of 150pounds and then add this to the net weight to get the gross weight. So:

150*0.04=6 pounds can be used for wrapping etc

To find the gross weight:

150+6=156 pounds gross

After 2 hours:
The car traveling at 30 mph has traveled 60 miles
The car traveling at 40 mph has traveled 80 miles
Since the cars moved away from each other at right angles to each other the straight line distance is:
d = sqrt{ 60^2 + 80^2} = sqrt{3600 + 6400} = 100

For the parking meter:
1 dime + 1 nickel = 3 nickels x 12 min = 36 minutes = 0.6 hrs = 3/5 hrs

for the gross weight:
150 x 4% = 150 x 0.04 = 6
150 + 6 = 156

I don't even want to look at the first problem. It would involve a^2 + b^2 = c^2, and I don't want to deal with that.

The second question is 3/5 of an hour.
A nickel and dime is fifteen cents, which would be three times the amount of "12 min. for 5 cents" , so multiply 12 x 3 to get 36 min. out of an hour, which would be 36/60.
Then simplify that.

You can make a proportion for the last one.
.04 (4%) x
______ = ____
1.00 (100%) 150

Then multiply 150 by .04, and you get 6. Divide that by 1, and get 6 again. So the 4% of 150 would be 6 pounds, so subtract 150 by 6 and get 144 lbs.

You have to do the math yourself, but this should get you started.

#1 (30mph x 2hrs) + (40mph x 2hrs) = _________

#2 1 nickel + 1 dime = 15 cents, so 15cents x 12min = _________; then divide that by 60 (min per hr) and work out the fraction.

#3 150lbs x 4% (or 0.04) = _____________, then add this to the 150lbs.
