My son is almost 8 months old and has nursed since birth. Over the past few months he has not been gaining the weight that he should, but within the last month he only gained 5 oz. when he should have gained a pound. I have to introduce formula and just started yesterday but I can only get him to eat it thickened with rice cereal. I need him to drink it so that he can eat food like before. I need to get creative but don't know what to do. Any other moms have similar problems what did you try? Please help I need my son to gain some weight. I don't plan on quitting breastfeeding but my milk supply is definitely low and my son needs to grow so please don't bash me for supplementing.

BTW he will not take a bottle and will only take sips with a cup. As soon as he tastes it he pushes it away. He is way too young for whole milk so please don't suggest that. Thanks in advance.

The tried and true way to get more milk is to nurse him more. Offer him the breast before any solids, try to squeeze in more sessions throughout the day. If you work, as I do, consider a baby honeymoon where you spend the weekend, or a couple days, in bed with baby nursing him as often as you can.

Oatmeal naturally increases your milk, as will fenugreek tablets (from your health food store.)

Are you the one concerned, or is your doctor concerned?

Babies, despite what we like to think, don't fit onto a chart, they grow at their own rates. As long as you're not limiting his food he's growing at the RIGHT rate for his own little body.

Has he started moving more? Crawling? That can cause them to grow less in weight. As long as he's growing at all, he'll be fine.

You don't HAVE to supplement with formula, I promise you, you make better milk than processed cow milk in a can.

You carried that child, you birthed him, you make the best food for him. Formula is harder to digest and doesn't have the best fats and proteins to help him grow.

I understand your concerns, I really do, I had similar problems with my first baby--but have faith in yourself! You can do this! You're his mother! Nothing can feed him like you can.

If you nurse him more, you'll make more milk, and he'll gain the right weight for himself.

Have you tried "Mothers Milk Tea" you can get it at GNC and read the directions, and it should help with your supply. Try and offer the breast as often as you can, as it should help stimulate your lactation. If you can try and see if there is a local LaLache League around you, they have wonderful information!

he's 8 months old. he needs baby food, like, from a spoon and a jar as well. At least a bit. At 8 months, they just need more to grow with.
