Unique art gift is the best present.
There is a web site –photoartomation.com ( http://www.photoartomation.com ), they convert a digital photos into paintings of different art styles and print them on canvas.
My friend sent them a picture and they turned it into beautiful piece of art. I saw it and it really looks good.

Do not give her something for the house.
Give her instead something for her own, something that she'll consider fun and awesome.
-Purse with something inside like a small wallet or make up.
-Out to dinner to have the chance to talk and get along but, invite others so it won't be ackward or tense. People that knows her and are good company to her. At the end (previously arranged with the restaurant) have the server bring to her a cake and some of her favorite flowers.
-If she likes to travel, ask around and find out where she would like to and buy her a round trip ticket.
-Find out what's her favorite perfume (not the cheap ones), the one she always wanted and never got. Favorite flowers will also go great with it.
-If she likes to write, buy her a special paper to write and an awesome pen-pencil set. Go to a nice Bookstore or to a paper store or to a School Supply store and get some of the most beautiful paper designs. Then also get in the same place a very nice folder to place the paper and set of pen-pencil or just a very nice pen. Also in those places they give you the option to engraved her name on the nice folder or even on the paper and pen-pencils... up to you where.
-If she reads but have difficulties doing so, buy her a very nice book on tape. Find out first what kind she likes. Along with it buy some music she likes.
Well, I have so many ideas that I don't want to bore you...
But, I hope I helped you a little and wish that you and your Mom have the most wonderful time together. Remember that age and time also changes people and, most of the time, for good... specially mothers.
I cross my fingers for you... Have fun!

I have found that mothers unlike fathers do not appreciate and gift they can use. No vacuums or pots or anything. I would go with something similar to a Mother's Day gift. You can never go wrong with a birthstone ring or necklace with either the children's or grand-children's birthstones embedded.

If your mother has been there for you she deserves to be treated with a little respect. You should know what your mom likes. But the one thing she need is for you to tell her that you love her. She does not deserve to be upset with you guys not getting along.Send her flower/card or just surprise her with a birthday party. I hope everything gets better.

Cook her a homemade dinner or take her to one of her favorite restaurants.

Have flowers delivered with at least one red rose (symbolizes your 'love' for her).

Clean her entire home or present her with a 'rent-a-maid for the day' gift certificate.

Give her what she really wants...an afternoon spending honest, quality time with her. Get to know who your Mom really is and let some of your fences down allowing her to get to know the true you.

Have fun with it!

Try giving her something handmade. :) Or you can take her to a spa or something. And since you said you haven't been getting along very well, remember to spend time with her on her day. Nothing is better than showing how you still love and care for her. [...you do right?]

What ever you do, make it respectful. Think of the fact that this is your MOTHER who is your most valuable asset. Know that God is watching you and that you need to please Him first of all. Remember this, What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us? - Romans 8:31. The Lord daily loadeth us with benefits, even the God of our salvation. Selah. - Psalm 68:19. Peace, Love and God Bless.

How well do you know her and what she likes or wants? She may not be as impressed by the cost of the gift as she is by the thought of it.

get her some flowers?
and make her a thank-you card for all the things she's done for you all these years..
i think that would mean more to her than an expensive gift.
good luck on finding her a present..
