In my website, www.schoolnotes4u.com, which is totally free for students of Grade XI/XII, i have used
1) Equation editor which can be added from tools of microsoft office. When you install, microsoft office, it is normally typical installation which will not include equation editor. To add it, go to add/remove program in control panel and click on add/remove microsoft office, then click on add and in microsoft tools select equation editor and install it.
2) Also you can use microsoft word, click on insert at top and on symbol. This gives you additional mathematical symbols. But this is not as versatile as equation editor.

Well, it depends on what kind of math symbol.
In a writing program you can select "special character" and look for the mathmatical symbol.
But there are certain ways you can otherwise type a symbol on a computer.
Examples:
x^2 is x squared.
x^3 is x cubed.
x^(1/2) is the sqaure root of x.
X^(1/3) is the cube root of x.
Hope that helps!

There are programs available for math notation. I use Microsoft Word, which has the ability to insert objects with math symbols using Microsoft "Equation" as a plug-in for Word.

try this: http://math.chapman.edu/~jipsen/tiddly/tiddlymath.html
I use .html files with ASCIIMathML(http://www1.chapman.edu/~jipsen/asciimath.html ) edited with notepad or wrangler (Mac)
then I use firefox that has a pluggin (example to be viewed with firefox: http://giovanninicco.com/mathwiki/?title=eserciziPrimaC
for use in local you must download
ASCIIMathML.js file
example from here http://giovanninicco.com/ASCIIMathML.js
then put this code
then if you write $(x+y)^2=x^2+2xy+y^2$ on html code it looks fine and you can print it.
try this code on notepad:
an example:
$int_0^pisin^2xdx= int_0^pi sinxsinxdx =-int_0^pisinxdcosx$
did you remember of use firefox?
$int_(r^2)^inftyxdx= ...$
(SAVE AS try.html on your desktop then click it)
