Please dont say...metals and nonmetals......what about these properties make it more or less conductive?

The electonegativity of group 1 alkali metals compared to that of group 7 halogens is very low and their ionization energy is very low. This means that their valence electron can easily leave them and become mobile electrons while the halogens will not have any mobile electrons. The presence of these mobile electrons account for their conductivity--the mobile electrons can carry current since an electrical current needs delocalized charged particles(mobile electrons, mobile ions in aqueous solutions) to propagate it. It is interesting to note that metals, including group 1 metals, always form the so-called metallic bonds. A metallic bond can be imagined as a 'sea' of mobile electrons holding together positively charged nuclei. Since metals always exhibit metallic bonds, metals are generally conductors.

The group 1 elements are metals, so a certain "wire" made of any of them would have a concentrated mass surrounded by electrons that could transfer electricity. The halogens are at best metalloids (I), liquid (Br), and gases. As such they don't conduct electricity well.

simply put, metals are generally better conductors than nonmetals. Group 1 consists of metals, group 7 of nonmetals.
