A book on the Bible, explaining it? I would look at a translation like "the message", which is written in modern day English. You won't find a single book explaining the Bible in one place. They don't exist. You can get an entire book dedicated to the first half of Genesis. If you want study resources, the first answer is a good place to start. There is a site called www.biblegateway.com which has links to free online commentaries, so you can look whatever passage up in a commentary and see what other people thought about it. You can also specify the translation you want to look at (and they have 'The Message').

you could try a teenagers Study bible. it is a full bible, but it also has little lessons and explainations every few pages that break down the previous 2-4 pages of scripture, as well as discussion questions for yourself or a group of people as to how the bible can help you in your life today. what Jesus would say to this or that, such as is it wrong to party all night? Driving fast? What exactly is Love? and so forth. I took my sister's from her when she didn't want it anymore, and it is interesting reading even for an adult of 30 like me.

Introducing the Bible by Gerald Hughes & Stephen Travis. It's only about 100 pages and written in plain speech. Published somewhere around 1980. The only drawback (at least in the edition I had) was lousy color reproductions for the pictures.

Books on the Bible? Don't quite know. But the easiest book to read in the Bible, in terms of understanding, is definitely Psalms, it's about pain and joy and hurting and fear, emotions that everybody experiences. Psalms, anybody can connect to it.

I would suggest Psalms, Proverbs, Song of Solomon and Romans. They offer positive reinforcement for any of God's people, among many other books of the Bible. What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us? - Romans 8:31. The Lord daily loadeth us with benefits, even the God of our salvation. Selah. - Psalm 68:19. - Peace, Love and God Bless.
