Most nicer hotels require a credit card to reserve a room, I only have a debit card. Is this sufficient?

A debit card is just fine.

However, if you wish to reserve a room with a debit card, SOME systems will automatically put a hold on the stay amount. The hotel I work at currently, and the one I worked at before did not do that. We only put a hold on the stay amount when someone checked in with a debit card.

When you reserve the room, ask if there will be an automatic hold with the reservation.

as long as it has a hologram thingy, it will be sufficient. Just be aware that they will put a hold equal to the entire stay including taxes on the card when you check in..meaning the money is taken out immediately. So make sure you have enough in the account to cover it completely plus a pad to cover whatever else will clear.

Yes, we use ours all the time and have never had a problem. This way we have no bills to pay. We only use the credity in dire emergencies.

Yes, but make sure your daily limit is raised. You don't want to reach your limit if that is the only way you are paying for things that day.

Try to get a credit card, so you can use in case of emergency only...

That's fine. They just want some form of "plastic" because it is traceable. This way they can bill you if you forget to cancel.
