In a word, Ms Crone, CARELESSNESS. One only stumbles over obstacles when one isn't paying attention to what one is trying to navigate around. All one need do to avoid stumbling around is to be observant, even in the dark you have other senses that can serve to guide you carefully. All you need to do is use the correct senses in ALL circumstances.

Long Answer:
According to Newton's first law, an object in motion continues in motion with the same speed and in the same direction unless acted upon by an unbalanced force. It is the natural tendency of objects to keep on doing what they're doing. All objects resist changes in their state of motion. In the absence of an unbalanced force, an object in motion will maintain this state of motion. This is often called the law of inertia.

There are many Unbalanced forces that can cause me to stumble, but unlike most objects in the universe I can choose my reaction. If I see it come I can change course and go around it, if blind-sided I can work my way through it or I can let it them make me stumble.

Short Answer:
Me. Most of life's shadows are caused by standing in ones own sunshine.
