I think the movie was better, but the novel is still a classic, and a personal favorite...

A truly powerful book of teenaged life and miserable family dynamics that shape your life. It was required reading when I was in school late 80's early 90's. I think I read it twice, and we got to see the film with a then young Patrick Swazye as the older brother. It's a classic story because the boys "find" themselves. They have something to hold onto in the end because they make themselves a new family by being close to their friends. That sounds like a very wimpy thing to say perhaps but if you think about it--it is true. Don't be afraid to enjoy books! They are meant to make us all stop and think. And if you get more out of some stories than from others, then great! More power to you and keep reading! Whether the book is better than the movie is a matter of opinion. Generally tho, the book gives you more to visualize in your mind. When you're watching a movie, it is the director and the vision of the cinematographer, and the excellence of the costumer to keep the actors to the script. But not all movies based on books are bad. Outsiders was pretty good as a film. However, if you read below, certain of those other books that have cinematic counterparts often don't end the same between the film and the book. Which leaves people a little sad when a beloved book becomes a movie that doesn't live up to expectations of being faithful to the plot of the book.

Yes, I remember reading that book in school (the early 80's). It was a very quick read.
Books are almost always better than the movie - so much more info can be given to the reader.

I love this book. It really was the first book that told a story of life events of the pressure and differences of class in the mid 50's.

I do. I even thought highly of the movie, made some time ago. It's nice to find a good book, isn't it?
