The show has been popular forever and is making a lot of people a lot of money. I'd say that makes his opponents the idiots.

He's extremely liberal. To most other liberals he is great, to most conservatives he's an idiot.
The only liberal leaning show I like is "Family Guy", it's not as bad as "The Simpsons" though. "South Park" is the best, they are libertarian, so they make fun of the left and the right, but mostly the left.

Groening's "art" is that of satire -- it's his job to mock anyone in the news. He does well because it's usually such clever satire.
Some people just don't like it because it hits too close to home.
