They are a group of people who own certain territories or protect their certain race against others and basically work together as one. Each gang has the same beliefs (most of the time, at least). That's basically it. People who have had a bad childhood and never really felt loved and things like that, are more likely to join gangs just because of the sense of unison and having others there for them. Some even have good families but just choose to leave them anyway for something they feel stronger about, such as a religion and a lot of other things. When you hear about gang violence, that means that multiple gangs are fighting against each other physically. I live in an area with plenty Hispanics and other races so there are quite a few gangs here where I live. You should really research more on gangs if you don't know what they are because it's important that you try to minimize them by convincing your friends and loved ones not to join them or any little siblings if you have any, because there are gangs out there like MS-13 (one of the largest gangs in the world, they have already owned certain territories in about 30 different states, just in the US, and have already spread all the way to Spain and Mexico) once you join that gang it is for life. If you try to get out of it, the gang members hunt you down and kill you. There was a VERY interesting documentary on the national geographic channel about this MS-13 gang and they interviewed a lot of its members and showed some drive by shootings and the gang members explained everything they did and why they did it. Try looking it up on Youtube. Sometimes the only safe place for gang members who want to quit the gang, is jail, just so nobody will come kill them. Some people join gangs just when they are only children. It's a shame to have to live that way. Stay away from things and people like that and never let anybody join a gang. Also, research more about MS-13. Very interesting. I know a couple of people who have relatives in this gang.

The gangs exist to protect each other from other gangs, make money and live the kind of lifestyle where the rules don't applyt to them.
They organize and sometimes start out as protection, but violence once unleashed seldom diminishes. They begin to look for "slights" or "someone disrespecting" and then go after them with guns blazing.
The more sophisticated gangs get into higher end drug trafficking, contract killing, etc.
Crips outnumber bloods by a very large margin almost everywhere. They are of course traditional enemies but sometimes cooperate in drug deals, etc. to benefit financially, but it is an uneasy alliance.
Gangs truly are the scourage of most larger cities, especially the Los Angeles area.
Gangs are also moving into smaller cities and towns where law enforcement resources aren't as strong and dedicated gang units don't exist yet.

Good Question....I have been pressured to join many gangs because I go to a High School with alot of gang member. They have 1,000,000 + gangs in this world....Blood, Crips, Sur 13, ect..... But to answer your question , many kids have different reasons, but when I asked some of them they could never give me a straight answer....I think its because they don't even know why ! Maybe they just want to be "cool", and to fit in...Maybe they have no parent figures so they look to a gang as a "family", maybe the kid has older siblings that are in gangs, and they learn at a young age. There will never be one straight answer for the question because many people have totally different situations. I really think people join gangs because they are afraid to be unique....

The whole point of gangs is not violence, but it is like a family. You would do anything for your family right? Those kids never had anyone growing up so they joined to have that sense of Family. But their turf is their home, and if someone just came barging into your home, wouldn't you react? Bang em' out? They do what they have to, to protect each other. Even if it means killing, dying, or going to prison for their gang.

Good for you! You demonstrated a lot more intelligence than those who elect to join a gang. Young people who join a street gang cannot think for themselves, rather, they prefer the gang or group mentality. They have no structure or goals in their lives. They are too lazy to get a higher education or how to finance one. They think they need protection (in some cases that is no choice, such as in prisons). They are misguided enough to see the perceived glory, admire the lifestyle and/or clothing, think it is cool, but are not aware of the reality that awaits them (death and/or prison). I'm sure this list is not conclusive.

They fight for property that doesn't belong to them. Ridiculous. I say we incarcerate anyone and everyone involved with gangs, put them in the same prison, give them knives, bats, chains, and what ever else they can kill each other with, and tell them that the last one standing gets 1 million tax free dollars. Then put it all on pay per view, and let them entertain us.
For added fun, lets throw in all the child molesters, rapists, murderers, junkies, drug dealers, and car thieves. Let them join in the fun.
And instead of awarding the winner with the money, we charge him with the murders of all the rest of the inmates, then give him the chair.
But what can I say, I'm just bored with network TV.
Did I mention that all gang members suck? And so do the animals that think they are cool.

Gangs scare me... they are people that I'm not going to tango with. I live in a small town but I see on the news drive by shootings and gang related stuff. I have to agree with the guy/girl saying the are protecting their turf and they don't own anything to protect, they kill each other over stupid stuff. Years ago I was told not to flick my head lights off and on at a car to let them know that there head lights were off, it was a game and if anyone flicked their headlight they would chase you down and shot at your car... That's scary stuff!

They aint no good for nothing or for nobody. They promote violence and drugs. Most don't make it to see anything resembling a ripe old age. What's the old saying? Live by the sword and thou shalt die by the sword? Two main rappers have died that promoted their gang/rap culture music and lifestyle yet are still looked up to. Tupac is nearly worshipped and he's as dead as a doornail. Is that someone that should be looked up to?

Gang activity usually involves some sort of illegal money making... (drugs) and turf wars over territory.
And that's pretty much true with ALL gangs, regardless of race.

a lot of my friends are crips...i think that most people in gangs join to feel a part of something. also they may do it for protection from other gangs. a lot of gangs, such as bloods and crips, fight for 'territory' because they need/want to feel powerful and in control. most gangs are the same things, do the same things, except for they rep different colors and names..
