For some reason, there are an uncomfortably large number of people whom I've encountered thinking that our government needs to be either democratic or republican. These same people despise the opinions of people on the other side of the fence.

Why can't they see how much the right needs the left, and the left needs the right?

Republicans are realists. They're able to implement policies that guarantee our international safety, as well as the safety of our country's economy. However, many claim they do so without much compassion; often sticking to the constitution instead of the general will of the people.

Inversely, democrats are idealists. They're often proposing the hypothetical solutions, the best case scenarios. This (in my opinion) isn't always realistic for our country, but on an emotional and personal level, it makes more sense to me.

(This is just an interpretation of politicians' beliefs and morals, not their actions, which tend to stray in all sorts of crazy directions.)

It is for these reasons that democrats and republicans need to realize how vital it is that they learn to utilize their opposites' strengths in order to compensate for their weaknesses. Republicans can modify democratic ideas and theories in order to make them more realistic in the real world, and spending time with the Democrats will grant the hardcore Conservatives the opportunity to grow a soul. Win-win, no?

What do you think?

We have our differences but IMO when the chips are down...we are one nation UNDIVIDED.

Your missing the reason that politicians run for office in the first place .

The law partners select the kid with the best record in school and a nice wife and kids and who goes to church and then suggests and enables them to run for office .

They are then elected and the job is to go get money . As much as they can because that is what will benefit the people .

Democrat or republican makes no difference .

The ones who get re-elected are the ones that bring back the most money and that means they need to wheel and deal . This means 90% of the people lose out to support 10% of the population in a manner befitting a king .

Two homes ,new cars ,dinners at places that require a reservation , nice $600,000. dollar yacht ,designer clothes and the best of everything .

Of those 10% living like kings you have 3% pulling the strings and it is these people that make policy in this country .
This is why we never seem to be able to make life much better then what it is now .

We are not meant to get along . The people in power make it so that we make fun of others beliefs . Who takes Scientology as a serious religion . For the Jesus folks who really thinks any Jews are going to heaven . (THEY KILLED JESUS ) and refuse to accept him as their savior .

White black red yellow we are all pitted against one another for one purpose .

As long as we are busy fighting among ourselves no one even looks at the problem and tries to solve it .

We just point a finger at a group of people and it is their fault .

Instead we should look at the real cause which is interest ,taxes, and insurance that we are forced to pay .

We need to evaluate our situation better and stop pointing fingers .

Truth is what works is often the simplistic plan .

That sounds nice--and actually, I agreewith you. So would most Democrats and Republicans.

But check your idealism at the door and look at the facts--the last 8 months in Washington are a good example of the problem.

Time after time the Democrats--and often quite a few Repbublicans--have tried to work together--"bipartisan" eforts--and in good faith.

And time after time, the small group ofextremists in the right wing of the GOP, along with the Bush administration, have scuttled these efforts. The problem is that this group--and again, its not all, or even the majority, of Republicans--this small group are not interested in working with anybody, will not listen to others, and won't deal in good faith.

Bipartisan co-operation is the norm in the US--far more so than most other countries. And when this bunch of extrimists is out of power, we can get back to normal. But until then, that's not going to happen. I don't like that any better than you do--but that's the way it is.

That's what the moderates are for. Currently both parties feel that the way to win elections is to favor the core voters - the ones most likely to vote - and these are by definition radicals. When a large majority of Americans actually vote, the left and the right have a hard time winning but currently, well under 50% of eligible voters vote. If, say, 40% of the eligible voters vote and one candidate gets a majority, say 51% to 49%, then the President is chosen by about 20% of the eligible voters. That makes life easy for radicals and the parties will not change until the American people get serious.

Around here? Never happen! People use this site to vent.

In real life? Happens every day. Republicans and Democrats work side by side.

The notion of Conservatives lacking a heart is a Liberal notion which simply doesn't find basis in fact. Public policy, however, needs to be based on sound and rational fact, not on emotion.

Sometimes the best way you can help people is to sift through their emotions and get them to set them aside and deal with financial realities, because emotions or not, life must go on.

They cannot get along by any design.
They are two heavyweights made of completely opposing groups. They cannot and will not ever get along.
It's the system that made them that is wrong. We shouldhave parliamentary politics in this country where six or eight parties can form majorities. Our system is a joke.

Republicans are not realists. They are capitalists and charlatans. They keep the grass growing.
Democrats have good intentions but sometimes go beyond resources. This is where they fail when they could be unbeatable.
911 is proof that even in times of great crisis, their war still continues. It always will until the system is changed.

The trouble is I don't like most of the leftist idealism. It's either entrenched in anarchism or socialism bordering on politically correct fascism. If we're supposed to be compassionate to the merciless then it's just as easy to be merciless to the innocent. Good intentions is a matter of perspective and is often misleading. The best solution is traditional morality because time-tested methods usually work better than things that just sound good on the surface.

I view our parties as a positive atomic charge and a negative atomic charge: neither of us can ever meet in the middle. We are polarized because are parties are very fundamentally different, I mean it has got to the point where we don't even agree on what is good for our country anymore! With that said, is it really realistic to believe our parties will ever unite? I believe not and it will eventually result in some kind of schism in our country that will seperate us indefinately, hopefully this schism will happen in a non-violent way.

I like a couple democrats, but when they disgrace the troops ( As they have been steadily increasing in doing lately) and spit on the troops.

I will simply not tolerate it. They promised not to do it ever again. They promised they could be against the war and never again Anti Troops, but that is what the Democrat leaders are doing.

IF they people of the Democratic party would stand up and condemn their leaders for thier disgraceing of the military then I will stand beside them even if I disagree with everything else they say.

Also the Democrats tend to defend bad behavoir with other bad behavoir. Someone does something wrong. "Well this person from your party did this." I absolutly hate that. If both people did something wrong don't defend them, Condemn them and get them out of power. Period.

In an ideal world, you are right, but the problem is what happens to all of the politicians once they get into office. If they used the position the way they are suppose to, this country would be greater than it is now.

The problem is that both parties (at least, both major parties) realize that they're most powerful when they're not in agreement. If they polarize things it gets people angrier and more frustrated.

I know that both parties need to get along, but I don't really think it'll ever really happen. There's already too much of a division in them.
