Generally b/c many religions hold Sunday as a day of reverance and prayer. It started back before the middle ages when EVERYONE was religious and societies have just kept moving with it.

Col:2:16: Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holyday, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath days:
Sunday is considered by many to be the celebration of the seventh day or "Sabbat"; making Monday the first day of the new week. Others celebrate Saturday as the seventh day; then Sunday would be the first day.
Since nowhere in the Holy Bible can you find a name for ANY day of the week (only the first day, the seventh day or "Ge:7:11: In the six hundredth year of Noah's life, in the second month, the seventeenth day of the month, the same day ....etc.) there is no mention of whether the seventeenth day of the month was a Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday Saturday or Sunday. The Persians (Iranians) celebrate the sabbath on Friday. Does that make Saturday the first day of the week?
Therefore as the first answer was given, the names of the days of the week are determined by man and the last two days whatever their names will be the weekend and the next day (the 8th day) will be the first day of the week.

It all depends on how you look at it. I guess they call Sunday a weekend because a business day start on Mondays, and in the Christian religion Sunday is the day of rest, so the next day after that is Monday.

I don't know what the answer to your question is. But I want to note that when The Bible says God created the earth in six days and rested on the seventh, I don't think Sunday was the seventh, as some people have stated. That might be a common misconception.

The people above me with the "Sunday is the 7th day" answers are probably correct. But just for fun, I like to think of Saturday and Sunday as "book ends" for the rest of the week.
We call them book ends because they sit at either END of the books we're holding up. Sunday is the first one, the weekdays are like the books, and Saturday is like the other one!
Not based on any kind of fact whatsoever, it's just a fun way to look at the subject :)

Well for your information "Sunday " is the seventh day of the week. If your a Christian you would know this already. You see in the beginning God created the world. And in the world he began to do all the work for six day. On the seventh day he rested. And that day human intensionally picked "Sunday" as the seventh day and which it is the last day of the week.

Monday is usually looked at as the first day of the week because it's the first day that students return to school ... and it's also the day that most government institutions and workplaces resume business.
