the first one is The Tale of Despereaux: or the story of a mouse, a needle and thread and some soup ??? the author is Kate DiCamillo. I think that's how it starts.

the one about the girl being accused of murder sounds familiar, is it the story of the girl who lives in the backwoods someplace and she's accused of murder because her enemy, this big bully boy is dead in the back room of his family's general store and she was the only one in the room and the last one to see him alive? I forget the name right now. but I have a reading list, so I'm sure I have the title written down somewhere.
