The Matches is one of the best alternative/indie bands out there right now, in my opinion. They're kinda weird, but they have some really good songs. I saw them at Warped Tour this summer, and totally fell in love with them, they're just so fun. Check out their songs "What Katie Said" and "Salty Eyes."

Daphne Loves Derby is really good too. They're kinda like a cross between Death Cab For Cutie and Plain White T's, only much much better, haha. They came out with a new album earlier this year called Good Night, Witness Light, and it's really, really good. Listen to "Cue The Sun" and "A Year On An Airplane."

If you're into electronica, check out The Birthday Massacre. They're a bit on the dark side, but the music itself is really poppy, kinda video game-inspired almost. Listen to their songs "Unfamiliar" and "Video Kid."

Meg & Dia is also another really good band. They're songs are based off of books, which is really cool. Listen to "Monster" and "Roses."

Mae is also another amazing band. They also just released a new record earlier this year, called Singularity. It has some really good songs on it, but I prefer their previous albums just a little bit more. Check out their songs "The Everglow" and "This Is The Countdown."

Other bands you might like:
Self Against City, Dear And The Headlights, Copeland, Minus The Bear, Wolf Parade, Anberlin, Shiny Toy Guns, Funeral For A Friend, Jack Off Jill, The Postal Service, Limbeck, The Last Goodnight, Straylight Run, Silversun Pickups, Cobra Starship, Hit The Lights, and Head Automatica.

Well Kill Hannah and The Almost are not really indie rock... so please excuse if indie rock was really not what you were looking for because that is what I am giving you:

Pavement: A must. Completely underrated. The best, in my opinion, of all the 90s indie rock.
Sonic Youth: More experimental than anything, but can still fall into the category.
The Smiths: the original indie rock. Amazing.
Wolf Parade: On the "edge" of indie rock. Really fresh and just amazing.

Others that I am too lazy to talk about:
New Pornographers
Tokyo Police Club
Animal Collective
Arcade Fire
Beirut
Clap Your Hands Say Yeah
Klaxons
Kings of Leon
The Strokes
TV on the Radio
Voxtrot
Architecture in Helsinki
Belle & Sebastian
Built to Spill
Broken Social Scene

I will totally agree with that Asian Nerd down there since I live with him.

But I also love,

Rilo Kiley, who have changed there sound a little since there new CD came out "Under the Blacklight". I still will always be a huge fan though. I love Jenny Lewis.

I also like Stellastarr* becuase they remind me of some new wave 80s music. I like the guys voice as well. He sounds very different than anything I have ever heard before.

The Shins, although have been out for awhile, never get old. I really like some of their new songs on their new CD.

Pretty Girls Make Graves recently broke up, but they are also very awesome.

Bloc Party is amazing.

More:

The Jesus and Mary Chain
Joy Division
Pixies
Bjork
Iron & Wine
The Flaming Lips
Arcade Fire
Bright Eyes
Elliott Smith
Sigur Ros
Wilco
Badly Drawn Boy
The Faint
The New Pornographers
Le Tigre
Blonde Redhead
!!!
The Libertines

Tons and tons really.

Maybe Frightened Rabbit/ Idlewild. Miles Kane frequently supposts AM and was once within the final shadow puppets. Love each Arctic Monkeys and Kooks myself. Maybe you can like Band of Horses, Bombay Bicycle Club, The Boxer Rebellion, Embrace, Foals, Hard-Fi, The Maccabees, Young The Giant, Portugal. The Man, Two Door Cinema Club, Hope you favor my recommendations. Arctic Monkeys and the Kooks are a well begin!

my favorite musician is Kevin Devine. his earlier stuff was more folky, but his more recent albums are a little bit more produced and rock sounding. Recommended album: Make the Clocks Move

if you're looking for something a little bit more nostalgic, The Redwalls are great Dylan/Beatles sounding. Recommended album: De Nova

and finally, if you're interested in maybe something more electronic, Stellastarr* is another favorite of mine. They're self titled album is superb.

The best site I've found recently for new music is www.indierockreviews.com. They have lots of good writers and seem to know a ton about music and good bands to check out.
