It's a new doctors office and struggling, I normally work mondays as I am full time, but the doc told me to take off. He worked alone that day (not one appt). When pay time came along I was told I would not be getting paid for that day since they can't afford it. I didn't know what to say, I was only payed for the hours worked. Should I have been paid that day by law or is it up too the employer? Thanks for the answers it will be a huge help.

They do NOT have to pay holiday pay and usually you have to work for at least 3 months in order to receive holiday pay. AT least any company I have worked for has been this way. Some companies only pay holiday pay if you actually work it.

It is up to the employer's discretion, unless it is in your contract that you will be paid.

Personally, I think it is absurd to think you are OWED something, when you did not work that day. It is great when your employer offers paid holidays/vacations, but it is not something guaranteed by law.
