Most new ones come with wireless built in and with directions on how to find networks and join them or to set up your own.

If you have an older one you could get a USB wireless card or could use the LAN connector to get into a network wired.

Otherwise you could use the modem connection to go to a phone line and dialup the internet.

In all those cases you need to subscribe to an Internet Service Provider to use the connection.

What make and model is your laptop?

With almost every laptop these days you can connect it to your home network (via wired or wireless) and it will work fine. Although if your home network isn't connected to the internet than you will have to sign up for internet service with a local ISP, you can look in your telephone book for details.

Stop being stupid and plug the magic internet cable into the wall if you have internet service. Of course how you connect that magic cable depends on what type of internet you have, which you neglected to share. Or get the magical internet waves from the sky with windows client, its in your taskbar and bitches at you from time to time that its not connected, or that it is. Assuming you have wifi or know how to find it. And assuming you have XP. Its soooo easy to help you with all the info you gave, btw.

you should be able to connect the connection from the Internet into your computer, if it is broadband make sure your not trying to plug it in the dial up slot and vice versa.
If you want wireless you have to find out what kind of card your laptop has and get a wireless router that is compatible with that, but without further details thats all i can say.

2. How are you trying to connect? Wirelessly? Wired?

Well there is a couple ways plug the cord into it or you can do it wireless if u have a computer that do this capabilitty. If u want it wirelessly you need to know what your modem is and your encrypted code that comes on the modem or something and on my computer it looks like a flash like with 3 bars or curved colums. click on that and it would detect it and then you have to figure out the security good luck
