The main thing is the message you are getting. If it says Searching for Satellite Signal its the DTV signal. If it says "No Signal" your tv is on the wrong input or youve got a loose cable between the TV and the DTV receiver.
Make sure the cable from the wall was the same one the DTV installer put it and that its attached where it says satellite in on the back of the receiver. Reset the receiver by unlugging it for 15 seconds and letting it reload. If its still Searching for sat signal, check all of your cables and connections between the DTV receiver and the dish outside. If everything is secure and its still searching, its probably your dish alignment. If you have a round/1 LNB dish (LNB is the white plastic circles that point towards the dish) you can go online at www.directv.com/dishpoint and theres instructions on how to align the dish. If you have 2 or more LNB's, dont bother trying to align the dish, as they are complicated to align, if this is the case, call Directv for them to send you a technician. Also, if you did this installation yourself, be sure that all coaxial cable is RG6 or RG11 cable and that theres no splitters on your satellite cabling between the dish and the receiver.

No power. Not turned on. TV not set to channel 3. You didnt pay for your subsciption. Bad code card inside box. Bad cable connection,
Did Direct TV do the install. IF not you have a problem.'
Was the dish properly programmed. You have to adjust it and program the signal on a certain channel on the control box.

Lots of things. Check the connections carefully. If that is all correct, then you need to check the pointing of the dish.
