Pump is shot or the belt that drives it....tilt the machine up if you can and look underneath---it there's lots of black debris under it, it's probably the belt. Easy to replace either way...get the model and serial number from the back of the machine and call some appliance parts stores for a replacement pump or belt or both. Drain the water out, disconnect hoses and power cord, tip the machine on it's side to access the pump or belt--- usually a few screws and some hose clamps hold the pump on....belt should go on by starting it on one pulley and turning the other pulley as you install it.

It sounds like your water pump is either broken or blocked.
Remove the bottom panel in the front (for most except for Maytag). The water pump should be right in front. On most, they have a filter that you can unscrew and clean. Some you have to remove the hoses.
If there is nothing in it, the pump is bad. If you've gone this far, there's not much more to changing the pump.

something must have gotten into the water pump.
I have got some weird stuff out of washing machine pumps over the years. The weirdest thang i ever got out of a water pump was a dolly parton bikini top. The most common was mop strings/rug strangs/gold chains/cheap mostly/lol, anyway you can save a buck or two by looking into the pump and maybe removing blocking objects.

Is the lid closed? It won't spin and drain if the lid isn't closed. Furthermore, if the switch which detects the lid closed is out of alignment, or the part of the lid which operates the switch is broken or missing, it will act as described. If it's the kind of safety interlock switch which you can see (as opposed to some models which are out of sight), try operating the switch with a pencil or screwdriver to see if it will spin.

they are right about the hose... but I just had this happen and it wasn't the hose.... it was a component of the motor had blown, and it was less expensive to pick up another used washer than to pay to get it fixed! good luck!
