I'm thinking the TV companies put a few mil in their pockets...

everyone is buying those things now... I've heard many people say "well, I'll need to get on eventually, so I go ahead and get it now"...

granted, they probably just wanted an HDTV and wanted to rationalize it... but it's just another little "push" in the "spend 1,000 on a TV" direction...

Digital is more efficient in terms of broadcast frequencies. It frees up more of the spectrum for use by new services and additional channels.

the idea is that in converting to digital it compresses the transmission range. Frees up more bands for other purposes.

its not about quality - its due to stopping analog signals which leave the earth.
