I've had several neon tetras in my tank for almost a year. All are super healthy, and swim around just fine. We had one die within two days of getting that one, but like I said, its been a year since we got them. Well, the other day I discovered one of the neon's dead. :(

Why did he die? He was swimming around just fine a few hours earlier,no spots, no ick that I saw. He looked healthy. What is their average life span? Maybe it was just his time? I went ahead and put ICK medicine in the tank, just incase but nobody else seems sick.

There could be several factors for one of your neon's to die, as in general Neon Tetras have a lifespan of about five years but can live 10 years or more with the proper conditions. You are right, maybe it was just his time. Do not medicate your tank unless you see any sign of sickness.

Neon tetras are considered easy to keep in a community aquarium of at least 10 gallons, with a pH of 5.0–7.0 and KH of 1.0–2.0. However, they will not tolerate dramatic changes to their environment. Neon tetras should be kept with at least six to ten of their kind, as they are considered "school fish". You are doing great, keep it up.

I've had some make it 6-7 years when I was a kid, some 25+ years ago. Now I'd say typically 4 years as they are genetically inferior to ones of the past.

In 2003 I was given two large Angelfish, a White cloud, and nine Cardinal Tetras, the Angels, one Cardinal, and the White cloud are still surviving. These were all older fish when I got them.
It's a sad story, how I came to have these orphans. They were the product of a broken home. The young man was thrown out of his former house and the spitful ex made him take his fish with him.
