The WRX STI is one of the best performance bargains out there. It's solidly built, it's blazingly fast and it sticks to the road like it's glued. It also has a cheap interior (pre-2008), a very firm ride and astronomical insurance costs. However, few other cars offer so much real-world practicality (interior room, a real trunk, decent fuel economy and a superb AWD system) with such high levels of performance.

Theyre great cars. I own and race my 2005 STi, and love the car.
As for an 06+, I would get an EVO before an STi. THeyre very slightly faster, drive a bit better, look much better, and are a bit more receptive to mods (granted, all STis and evos are very receptive to modding).
If youre getting an STi though, you seriously need to take it to a few track or autocross events. Its 100x better on the track than the street.
theres quite a bit of misinformation here though. The STi, while from rally heritage, is a track car, not a rally car. Insurance also isnt as high as they want you to think (although not cheap). Subaru is very good about your warranty. My local dealer kept a guy I knows car under warranty, even though he had about 450hp, tracked it regularly, and had all kindsa aftermarket parts (they did all the work on the car, and put the guarentee in writing). Not all dealers will do this, obviously, but many are very very leniant.
Mitsubishi used to be really bad with their warranties, but theyve fixed the issue (in case you read anything bad about the EVOs warranties)

I think it is a great car if you are into motorsports. The interior is very basic because all of your money is going into things that make the car go faster. If it is your daily driver and you aren't going to track the car, I suggest you look at a certified pre-owned Audi S4 or BMW M3. Both of which can be had for the price of a new STi, offer similar performance, and have much more features and amenities that make them easier and less tiring to live with on a daily basis.

Its a great car I know many people that race and pro rally them. Insurance cost is through the roof and repair parts are costly. Not the type of thing you can take anywhere to be serviced either. If you know a good Subaru mechanic or are in an Area that does not mind working on them and can afford the insurance, go for it. I happen to like the car.

Well, I'm biased because I absolutely love the WRX STI.
However, the new '08 model styling has put me off - as in, I think the front end is hideous. I shall wait to see if their next generation is better looking, before I get a new one.
Is it fun to drive? oh, yes.
Is it fast? reliable? exciting? yes, yes, yes
