I am a member of American MENSA. I'm not certain how I could "define" MENSA. The only thing all M's (as we call ourselves) have in common is an intelligence tested and proven within the top 2% of the general world population. We have diverse interests in everything, ranging from gardening to gaming and wine-tasting to square dancing. I enjoy being a member, and there are meetings and social gatherings literally several times a week for various interest groups to get together and socialize. I can't speak for MENSA at large, but I find that MOST M's have a thirst for knowledge and a desire to communicate and listen to others. It's quite difficult to be intelligent without gathering information and being able to reason.

Mensa was founded in England in 1946 by Roland Berrill, a barrister, and Dr. Lance Ware, a scientist and lawyer. They had the idea of forming a society for bright people, the only qualification for membership of which was a high IQ. The original aims were, as they are today, to create a society that is non-political and free from all racial or religious distinctions. The society welcomes people from every walk of life whose IQ is in the top 2% of the population, with the objective of enjoying each other's company and participating in a wide range of social and cultural activities.

Mensa (noun, from Latin 'mensa' (table)) - a social club and networking group for people who are good at taking IQ tests that occassionally pretends to be a high intellectual society.

I was invited to join Mensa at 15, but declined when I discovered they usually dealt with meaningless but impressive-sounding trivia. There was very limited exposure to expressing substantial discussions on anything but previously established and accepted "truth", and when anyone put forth anything that remotely questioned what is blindly accepted they were ostracized.
All in all, a trite and meaningless organization. They sked me to join because my IQ was 185. SO much for memorization of vastly useless trivia.

Mensa is the largest, oldest, and best-known high-IQ society in the world. Mensa (IPA: /ˈmɛnsə/; /ˈmeːnsa/ in Latin) means table in Latin as is symbolized in the organization's logo.
