While I agree humane mouse traps are easier and mouse friendly, and you get a two catch system for about $20. If you still want the snap trap option the following is for most standard snap traps:

Remove small staple holding locking bar to wood base.
Place bait inside curl found at end of bait pedal. Remove excess bait protruding from pedal.
Pull back bow and hold down with thumb.
With other hand, engage curved portion of the locking bar under small, V-shaped lip on bait pedal.
Place trap against wall with bait pedal facing the wall.
If trap draws ants, try using a small ball of cotton or strands of dental floss tied through hole in bait pedal curl.

This is about as tricky as it sounds, many a finger get caught up in these

Additionally, I've always found block bait to be far more effective than pellet bait

Now that you've gotten rid of your mouse, make sure to thouroughly clean the rat droppings; ventilate the immediate area, don a pair of rubber gloves, and with a water/bleach combo clean all areas known to have rat droppings

Buy a mousetrap. Only if you have tried a humane one and it didnt work!!!!!!!!!!

Point the pin at the end away from the spring.

Pull the metal piece that catches the mouse back towards
the pin.

Hold the metal piece that catches the mouse down with one
hand and lay the pin over it with the other hand.

Put the pin in the hole on the metal plate at the other end.

Hold the metal plate up and let go of the metal thing that
catches the mouse.

Put a block of cheese under the metal plate

Test it by pushing the cheese out with a wooden pencil, repeat the steps above.

But if you would rather set a humane one please do they are alot easier and the mouse lives!!!!!!!!!!!!!

There should be a bar on one side of the mousetrap, and a movable arm. Force the bar all the way to the other side of the mousetrap, and put the movable arm such that it is preventing the bar from going back to its original state. Then, find the notch that the end of the movable arm sits in. There should be more detailed explanations on the packaging.

these are cruel ( trial an error (see at least one comprehensive answer given)before you can learn to set them so mind fingers) try investing in sonic repeller which plugs into wall (may need one or two depending on range etc) Last time I looked they varied between £14 and £20 in UK. Traps and poison are risky, and using traps does mean emptying and killing the animal if the back has been missed one use of traps (in Aus) and never again - poison not good for other pets or if you have kids are a definite no no. Hope this is useful and you solve your problem soon.

First, put your bait (carrot is good) on the pin of the trigger.then push the bar against the spring to the other end of the trap, and hold tight. Then, hook the other end of the trigger to the bait pin over the bar, so that it can not spring back freely. Don't let go yet! Put it where the mouse will find it easily, and let go gently.

You have a couple of good answers already, but MAKE SURE you keep your fingers on the sides of the wood. Do not put you fingers in the line of fire. Snap traps are volitile, and hurt like a MFKR. Dead vermin is much better than it coming back or passing it on to someone else.

You don't! Please don't set the traditional traps. They are cruel and unneccessary. Try the new humane kind. They are easy to use, and are just like a wee box that you put food into, then the mouse is trapped and you can release him away from your house. There is no need to let a poor mouse suffer a painful death.
