Funny you should mention that. One Summer when I was at a hotdog/burgerstand, Me and a friend had taken a plastic leaf bag and filled it with helium and tied it off and stuck business cards on it from the stand, and let it fly off. Needless to say, the theory didn't work but, we were trying to get business to the business. I thought it would've been funny if it had really worked but, oh well. Must have flown for days because it went waaaay up there. Just a black dot, lol.

I have let many balloons go over the years, weather balloons that is. Quite frequently I do know where they end up. We sometimes would get a call from the 911 operator asking if the device someone had found was one of our instruments. Seems that people not knowing what those things are would call 911 and report that an airplane was dropping bombs on parachutes, or in one case poison gas containers on schools. Yep we find out sometimes.

Also in our city, we had a couple of people that for "sport" would use radio direction finders to chase the balloons and when they had collected a box full of instruments would deliver them back to the office. They would write down the location where they picked them up at and since they all have serial numbers that we write down, we know which day they were launched. Many of them we don't know exactly where they end up but since we do the calculations on the winds, we know approximately how far they go. The closest one reached over 100,000 feet but 2 hours later landed less than 100 feet from where we launched it. The farthest we know of was about 186 miles.

Toy balloons react the same way as weather balloons, at a certain height in the atmosphere, they burst.

"Neun und neunzig jahre krieg,
Liessen keinen Platz fuer Sieger.
Kriegsminister gibt es nicht mehr
Und auch keine Duesenflieger.
Heute zieh ich meine Runden
Seh die Welt in Truemmern liegen.
Hab' nen Luftballon gefunden
Denk' an Dich und lass' ihn fliegen..."

Yep. And I attached a notecard with my address so that whoever found it could write to me and tell me where it landed. I think it went about 100 miles!
