It kind of sounds like he just has a small case of poor bedside manner...I have heard that it's harder to tell if it's a girl but he definately didn't see a little boy part. If you're that worried ask for a second ultrasound or plan for either!

I am 23 weeks tomorrow and just had an ultrasound today. The baby was in the perfect position to see that it is OBVIOUSLY a boy. I am high risk and also had an ultrasound 6 weeks ago at which time the doctor told me "It looks like a boy to me". Again, it was VERY OBVIOUS that there was scrotum and a little penis. If there were something like that in the picture you would know it and the doc would not have said what he did. Ultrasounds are very accurate when it comes to being able to see the sex of the baby as long as he/she is in the right position. Being so early still (yes, going on 6 months is still pretty early), there is still a possibility of having another scan, at which time it should be much more accurate.

They can never really be sure - I have a friend who was told it's a boy, for sure, but it turned out to be a normal little girl. Sometimes, it's just hard to tell when they're little, sometimes the baby is turned just a little wrong, and sometimes, the scan just isn't that clear. I wouldn't invest in a lot of pink stuff at this point, but you can still prepare for the baby, even if you don't really know the sex before birth. My first two are 19 and 18, and I didn't know what they were before they were born, since doctors didn't perform routine ultrasounds back then.

if he said it is a girl i would be pretty sure it is a girl although boy parts can come at anytime so never be totally sure until you give birth whether it is a girl or a boy...
i know this is a very exciting time, and nervewrecking too, because you just want to know for sure what the sex of your baby is but cherish the pregnancy now because before you know it your baby will be here and you will be wondering where the time went
i would say you are having a girl though...it could just be your ob's way of expressing his thoughts...
Congratulations!

I don't think he would have said anything at all if he wasn't pretty sure. He probably would have said he couldn't tell. I bet he's right. But, he's just stating it like that to cover his butt in a way--just in case he's wrong.
(edit) I didn't thumbs down Trish, but I do have something to add to what she said. She's right that they think they can tell the sex by the heart rate. My doctor told me mine would be a girl by the heart rate--he was a boy. Which the ultrasound predicted correctly. It is more than a wife's tale, but the only experience I've had with it turned out to be wrong. Just wanted to add that.

I am only 18 weeks along and I just found out today that I am having a girl. I think at 23 weeks you would definately be able to tell if it was a boy.

boys are inevitably easier to distinguish than girls, but mistakes have been made for both sexes. You can wait and see if you have to get another scan at a later stage before planning anything, or you can just take a punt and buy lots of girls things.
Either way boys look good in pink and frills too, it's just plain discrimination that they cant wear them, lol
Good luck in what ever your decide to do.

Ask them the heart rate. Girls hearts beat faster than boys hearts, truly, it's no wives tail it's the truth and they can tell that way. They take the baby's heart rate every time you go so get that number from the Nurse. She'll know what I mean.
Do not worry if he's not sure; he does not care as much as you care about the sex of the child. It does not mean anything bad for you or the baby that he does not know for sure.
My guess is a girl, since boys have parts that hang down and are easier to detect, but as you said he's not sure.
Either way, hey it's your baby!!! Woooo Hooooo!

Sorry i became dilating for weeks. I even have been given sent homestead for the clinical institution at 40 weeks with contractions 5 minutes aside. I do ask your self why he could do a C-section quite than bring about? stay calm- I do recommend getting a yoga ball. take a seat on that to help loosen issues up down there. i think its what ultimately sent me into hard artwork. solid success!

did you ask how sure he was? i mean that is really the best way to know. judging by the way he said it doesn't sound very reassuring. but then i don't think he would have said it if he didn't feel that is what it was. i would ask him again, and if you are still nervous try to get a lot of nuetrals as well as your classic pink just in case. good luck and congrats either way
