I reasonably decline giving my children an allowance. My thought is this. They live here just like me. Chores and good grades are rewarded with room and board. No one pays me for cooking, cleaning, driving my kids to their sports and school functions, grocery shopping, troublshooting homework and sibling rivalry, and washing their laundry. What ever happened to the good old days when you actually had to find hard work outside the home to make what you spend? Good grades are expected. In the real world, you have to find your own job and work well at it to earn a paycheck to buy food. Even if you get $1, that is more than a lot of kids get.

This question is too cute : D.. However, I don't believe in allowances, especially if your parents are providing everything you need at home and all you have to do is go to school and clean the house sporadically. But I was 14 once and I know how it is.. First off, when negotiating allowances with your parents, you should take care of chores consistenly on a daily basis. Prove to them you are reliable and responsible. It's not fair to get paid every week and do the job when you feel like it.. The most effective way to get your parents to pay you allowance, is write down the all the chores you do and how many times you do them per week.. Ask them how much they think cleaning the bathroom, kitchen and feeding the cat is worth.. Let them tell you, you add the price up and whatever they offer you should take, because you don't have bills to pay yet. (Enjoy while you can.) So all your money can go on movies, candy, games, hair stuff or whatever you like and you won't have to keep asking your parents for money. But I think $15 per week is good enough for a 14 yr old.. Be reasonable..

What kind of chores does the 14-year-old do?
Some chores merit higher allowances. For example, making the bed is a given. It just should be done. After all, who will be sleeping in the bed? Washing the dishes takes more effort and effects everyone, so there should be more money allowed for doing that chore. Feeding one's own animals should not entail getting paid an allowance. That is part of the responsibility of having pets.

I researched this a bit when my stepdaughter came for a few months and a lot of parents seem to do 1 per year of age. She is 14 so we ended up doing $15 just to make it easier math. She had to vacuum the carpets, sweep the kitchen and bathrooms and help take care of her baby sister when asked (occasionally, not as regular babysitter)_

lets go with 15 dollars and earning the money by doing chores around the house. such as trash is their responsibility with out being nagged. Or mowing lawn each week. doing dishes or helping with dinner. and certainly being respectful and doing school work. if any of these things are a problem then allowance is forteited that week.

At twelve, my kid gets $10.00 a week for working around the house. She has to put $2.00 into savings, and $2.00 for church fund. She is given the choice of doing extra...$1.00 to match socks, or $2.00 to wash the car or maybe I'll offer $5.00 to clean out the pantry or to spend a few hours weeding the garden. But it is up to her, and I offer the jobs once a week to twice a month. Normally one of the kids will take it if they are running low on spending money.
