Yesterday was my due date. I went to the doctor and he said that my cervix was long and closed. We wanted to do an ultrasound on Tuesday to see how big the baby is and if he doesnt come by Wednesday then the Dr. is going to induce me on Thursday. Anyways, I woke up at about 8:30 am with strong regular contractions. I went to the maturnity ward around 1:30 pm and they said that I am having strong regular contractions but it isnt doing anything to my cervix. It is only a fingure tip dialated (what is that?) She said that I am probably in "early labor" and she sent me home with a sleeping pill. That knocked me out and I guess the contractions stopped because I didnt feel them while I slept. I just woke up and they are starting up again slowly. What is going on? Is this the real thing or what? I live an hour away from the hospital so it complicates things a bit. The doctor wont induce unless I am dialating or my water has broken.

Well, you are dilating, you went form long and closed to a finger tip dilated. If you are still having contractions, call your doctor and let them know. You might need to go back in a get checked again!

Good he's not eager to induce. It's not fun for you if he has to induce.

Early labor is just the start of a very long process of going through labor. Most labors are 18 to 24 hours long, see. Early labor is the start of that. They can give you a gel to soften the areas that is not softening if they need to. When they say it's only a fingertip dialated they mean it's no wider than a finger's tip or a tampon between your legs where a babies head must come out! Labor softens that area and widens it to let the person inside you come out; a fingers width will not let anybody out! Over time, slowly and carefully the body will open up to let that baby out. If it does not they can help it along.

Best of luck - your on your way and will soon be a MOM!! The best is yet to be!

First off- try to avoid the induction. It may or may not work, but it'll make your labor a lot more painful, and increases your risk of a cesarean.

Second - what you're experiencing is very normal. Its sometimes called early labor, sometimes prodromal labor. It can last for hours, or days, every mother is different. Most people do find (thankfully for you!) that most mothers who experience prodromal labor have much faster births when they hit "active" labor (4-5cm and beyond).

A fingertip dilated is 1-2 cm usually. Next time they check you, be sure to ask -cm dilation (0-10) station in the pelvis (-3 being very high in pelvis, +3 being crowning), and effacement of your cervix (how soft/thinned it is - it will be a percentage - your cervix thins and dilates together, you're looking for 100%)

Trust birth. Your body was made to do this.

early labor is the lead up to productive labor. It gets the cervex to start dialating (a finger tip means just that, the dr can get a finger tip in to your cervex, less than 1cm. It needs to be 10cm for delivery). It may be today, or a matter of a few days. Good rule of thumb is if you are having regualr contractions that are closer than 10 min (since its a drive for you) then get to the hospital. Good luck!

To me it hurt in my lumbar area, and the pain radiated throughout my lower back, through my hips, and even my legs, in addition to the regular abdominal cramping. Has the baby dropped? Because if it has, its head may in fact be pressing on your lower spine when you have contractions, whether they're Braxton-Hicks or real labor. Back labor is usually caused by the fact that the baby's face is pointing toward your front, with the back of its head, the hardest part of its body, against your spinal column. Hopefully, if this is the case now, your baby will turn around before the "big day." Good luck.

It means you are in labor but you have a long way to go for your body to be ready to deliver a baby. If the contractions get so strong that you can't talk while having them and are doubled over in pain, its time to get to the hospital. Good luck!

i have always heard that if it is your first child you should go to the hospital when contractions are regular at 5 minutes apart, if its you second or more then you should go when contractions are 10 minutes apart. so if you live an hour away go when they are a few minutes more apart. and early labor just means contractions have started but there are no cervical changes
