Originally we were a representative democracy much like Greece of old. But somewhere along the line, we became a republic.
Which is ironic as we try and spread democracy all over the world like butter on bread....but in fact we the people do not rule this country.
When was the last time the American people were allowed to remove a sitting president or congressman?
"We the people....." that is a democracy.....
We the represented.....that is a Republic........
We the complacent............that is Amercia

Basically a republic, but could be called a "democratic republic" because there is near universal suffrage.
It reminds me of a joke. A young boy asked his farmer father "Paw, are we a democracy or a republic?"
"Well, I reckon when the Democrats are in office we're a Democracy, and when the Republicans are in we're a republic."

America is a democratic republic, which means the people elect officials to represent them. In a true democracy, the people would rule. -RKO- 09/14/07

It is a Republic brush up on your history and while you are at is recite the pledge of allegiance your answer lies within. If you were required to recite this every day in school you would have known the answer and not have to ask this stupid question
