I meant to ask this on 9/11 but I was busy.

It depends. Usually tragedies are not avoided. Some people will take 9/11 and write something controversial. Some will try and give shape to the memory of that date. Some will translate the feelings into a dance. It depends on how the artist feels about the event and what they feel should be done with it.

In the theatre a tragedy is a self inflicted loss of something valuable because of a personality flaw in the main character

9/11 is a tragic event, but not a tragedy in the theatrical sense of the word.

The arts will deal with it with some distortion, some truth, some exaggeration, and some omission, since they emphasize the emotional aspects of things to tell stories.
