Babies have a reflex called the tongue thrust. In order to feed them solids, this reflex has to go away. If he still has the reflex, his tongue will push the food out. It means his digestive system can't handle it either. That means he's NOT ready for solids, try again in a couple weeks, or even a month. He doesn't even really need cereal until he's older, so don't worry that you're depriving him, milk should still be most of his diet.
It's not a matter of taste, it's a matter of his development. If he's pushing out the cereal he isn't ready.
Edit: The other answer is wrong: You should NOT mix their cereal with water, young babies still need the fats that are in milk with their cereal. Those fats help with brain development and you can't get them in water.

The average age at which you should be trying to start cereal is at age 5 to 6 months. 4 months would be pushing it (but do-able) and there isn't any harm waiting til 7 or more months.
On the first try, rice cereal is usually recomended (I think because it is a simpler grain). You should get the dry cereal you mix with fluid (not the baby food jars of cereal).
You should start trying only once a day, and then starting off with the mixture extreamly watery. As your baby gets used to it, thicken it up a little more each day.
You can use water, formula, or breast milk. I would suggest water so that your baby gets used to it. Later, when you're trying to feed baby away from home, water is so much easier than formula or breast milk, and you'll be able to skip another adjustment step.

Babies are really good at knowing their own bodies. If they aren't ready for it, they won't eat it. You should never force food. The current recommendation for introducing solids is BETWEEN six and nine months of age (American Association of Pediatrics), but there are some cases in which solids aren't introduced until a year old (in the case of family history of severe allergies). Babies don't really need solids until they are a year old. Many people decide to introduce solids when the baby starts to try to take food off the parents' plates. Don't stress over food. This will only add to the struggle. Just give it time. He won't go off to college still eating only breast milk.

Depending on his age it does take a little while for them to adjust to spoon feeding and won't necessarily learn it overnight... My DD is now 4 months and she's been on solids a few weeks. I tried the rice cereal on its own and she wouldn't take it, so I left it, tried again a week later. She took it but with a "yuk!" face!! Lol... So, I mixed in a tsp of pureed pear and she wolfed it down! She now has lunch and dinner and I mix a few tsp of cereal with a few tsp of either pureed pear, apple banana, pumpkin or sweet potato. They're just the things we've tried so far.
I like to try one thing alone for a few days to test for allergic reactions, if I see no rashes and poos are fine I move onto the next mixer!! Avocado next then carrots, zucchini's great too......
Good luck and happy feeding!!!

This is new to him. He has to get used to the entire experience. The spoon, the taste, everything.
Try a different time of day Act all happy and excited. He'll get the hang of it

Maybe he's not ready. I would ask your Dr if it's ok to mix it with something. I just started feeding my baby a couple weeks ago......takes some getting used to but he is adapting well. Don't force him.....give it time.

How old is your son? I started feeding NOah at 6mths. It took him about 3 wks to learn to open his mouth, swish the food around, and swallow it. It's a learned behavior. Just give it time, your little one will get it!

How old is this child? If he's not wanting it, it may be too soon to give it to him at all, or it may taste gross. Do not force him to eat something he does not want to eat.

How old is he? Try again later. If he's old enough, try it mixed with applesauce.
I generally skip baby cereal. It's funky and they don't like it AND they don't NEED it.
