every computer I've ever owned has started having problems with it after about 3-4 months of ownership. I need an anti virus program that will visibly make my computer run at its optimum speed, can anyone recommend one?

Use Bitdefender Total Security 2008. Besides the best protection it has some very tools too, to improve your computer's performance. Note that in todays world the virus creators and the viruses created are more intelligent than the software manufacturers. So only an antivirus will not do. The above mentioned solutionis an all in one suite which protects your computer from every possible threat challenging the viruses and its creators.
An remember one thing...........every antivirus on this planet consumes some considerable amount of resources....and most of the people don't realize this...... and opine on memory consumption being very efficient of some of them!

AVG and NOD32 but NOD32 is not user friendly and is mostly used by pros. AVG uses abouth 1/3 the system resources as Nortons. I use AVG Internet Security 7.5. I got it in a 2 year Retail boxed version on Ebay for $30 delivered to my door, 1/2 price of what it costs at Newegg. Some will push the free AVG but I don't think $15 a year is too much for something that does a lot more and has a firewall too.

I have had my laptop for over 3 years and have now got a second one and I have not had any problems with my Norton Anti Virus Software by Symantec. I renew it every year online or I go out to the local Staples and use the CD myself and I can only say I have not had any problems (keeping my fingers crossed)

For good anti virus protection I recommend AVAST (free edition)

For Anti Spyware programs > use Ad-aware 2007 and SpyBot Search and destroy.

To help speed up your PC > turn off un-necessary programs from starting when the PC starts.
to do this click on START > Run > type MSCONFIG > click OK > go to the STARTUP TAB and untick everything except your anti virus program.

This is a most difficult question to answer. The true answer is there is no real best anti virus, it depends a little on what you want and need. I can nominate two exceptional leaders of their field. KAV has huge detection rates and is my most recommended choice. Many experts agree that if you have to narrow it down to one or two for absolute best anti-virus it always includes KAV. The detection rates are huge and always on top of every big test,but........

The best anti virus is Kaspersky Anti Virus (KAV)

The AVG alone is FREE from the grisoft website. I run it along with FREE COMODO Firewall software...

I round things out with Spybot S&D ( Free ) and AdAware ( Free )

and CCLEANER ( Also FREE ) to keep the system clean...

Firestarter and ClamAV for the LINUX side....
