It happens on both Hot and Cold and usually when I turn it on full throttle fast.

WHat can I do to prevent it?

Obviously I could turn it on slower.

Even when i turn it on slow it happens.

Install an air trap. They look like little rockets and COMPETENT plumbers install them. Cheap houses don't have them. They stop the knocking and movement of pipes...

You need to replace the tap washer, Turn the water off at the main or stopvalve under the bench and undo tap and rep[lace the stem washer with a new one purchased at hardware store.

There is air in the pipes,you need to remove a tap to release the air,or it possible that there is a small hole in a pipe sucking air in,check all pipes if the first option does not work..

It usually indicates that the washer (probably on the hot side) is loose and is not closing so it rattles around and slams open and closed at turn on/turn off.

Pipe anchor came loose... Prevention::: Don't turn it on to full throttle fast...
