Ask Thomas Paine. I believe he is called a Patriot.

However, the writer of "Common Sense" was not considered a patriot by the English who ruled their Colony in which he lived.

I believe they would have considered his mass produced public material to be propaganda.

Fast forward to the 20th century, and the newspaper with its editorials and "op-eds" is in full bloom. It's all good, even when it's bad, because we celebrate free speech and public opinion. However, some had considered all mass media to be propaganda, and this is still the case.

Today, we use forums like Y!A Politics. The ability to respond instantly without at least counting to ten has changed the tenor entirely.

On the Web, there is little time or space for the calculation and cunning of true propaganda to take place, but the differences in opinion are no longer vetted, are sharper, and less moderated by far.

We should appreciate this moment in time, no matter how much opinionated tonnage we slog through, because the transparency and candor we enjoy today, may not last forever.

A mass-producted media frenzy over recalls of certain products made in China that contain toxic substances, throwing a gullible public in a needless panic, even though those products are only a tiny fraction of a percentage of all the otherwise safe products that come from the PRC.

In order to call it propoganda it has to be produced by the government or some political organization. There needs to either be a direct involvement, or some other connection, such as funding. Free market determines the success of a lot of outlets, not political organizations.

if you take the word material literally, you could also call that a flag. I'm sure many a questioner of our government has changed their mind on questioning authority when they saw the flag flapping in the breeze...

Though propaganda works just fine.

Unfortunately, for overworked, downsized news organizations, it's also the path of least resistance.
