I have tiny little clear shrimp-like animals growing in my saltwater tank and I'm not quite sure what they are. They're getting pretty big and its beginning to scare me, what are they? Does anyone know what I'm talking about???

Ghost shrimp are a freshwater species, but if you have live rock in your tank, there are several species of small shrimp that come in with it as eggs, or juveniles (they hide in the holes in the rock). Most types are harmless, and eventually end up as food for any fish in the tank.

Most saltwater parasites are too small to see without a microscope. There are a few larger ones, but these won't be moving around in your tank - they'll be attached to the fish.

To see what types you might have, see these links: http://home2.pacific.net.ph/~sweetyummy42/hitchhikers.html

I have 3 saltwater tanks with live rock in all, and sometimes the little stuff is very interesting to watch - I didn't add fish to my first tank for almost 4 months just because I liked to see what all I could find - especially with a flashlight at night.
